TGSRC Learn to Row Open Day a Big Hit

August 13th marked a big day on the calendar for the Takapuna Grammar School Rowing Club. The club opened its doors to budding rowers and their families for its much-anticipated "Learn to Row" open day. With a turn-up of 50 enthusiastic kids and their supportive parents, the day was buzzing with excitement.

In a bid to ensure that the new recruits got the best possible introduction to the sport, the club's seasoned rowers rolled up their sleeves and helped Sam, our new Head Coach, make sure the morning was a success. These senior members, having experienced the challenges and joys of rowing, were there every step of the way, guiding the novices through the basics and sharing their passion for the sport.

Kicking off the event, both the President and the Head Coach of the club extended a warm welcome to all present. Their words were encouraging, reminding everyone that every expert was once a beginner. This set a positive and motivating tone for the morning.

The attendees had an action-packed morning. One of the major highlights was the chance to actually get on the water. Under the watchful eyes of the club's existing rowers, the newcomers got a feel of the oars, the rhythm, and the sense of gliding on the water. For many, this was their first-ever rowing experience, and the conditions were perfect.

Off the water, there was no time to rest. A session on the ergometers (or 'ergs', as they're commonly known) was arranged. This gave the participants a taste of the kind of fitness and stamina that rowing demands. The groups toured the club's facilities, The Blue Shed is brimming with history, equipment, and stories, offering a sneak-peek into the world of TGSRC.

Last, but by no means least, a strength and conditioning session was on the cards. Here, participants got a crash course on the physicality of the sport. It was a gentle reminder that while rowing is deeply enjoyable, it also requires commitment, strength, and discipline.

All in all, the "Learn to Row" day was not just about introducing the sport to newcomers. It was about community, camaraderie, and discovering a passion for rowing. Here's to hoping that many of these fresh faces become the future champions of the Takapuna Grammar School Rowing Club.
