Spring Camp: Captain’s Report
This years’ spring camp was another great week for the club as we continue to build momentum in preparation for the upcoming summer regattas. It was a very rewarding few days, with us being able to spend a significant amount of time on the water with lots of valuable coaching to help the athletes develop across the whole club.
One of the most significant aspects of this camp was the amount of competitive racing we were able to get in. All squads participated in a seat racing and time trials which showed extremely positive results not only with the physical strength and technique that the crews showed, but also through the attitudes of all athletes as they persevered through some long hours on the water. On the final day, the camp ended with some races side-by-side against crews of different squads, with some tight competition between the junior and senior girls eights, along with the senior boys quads. The quality of the racing was a great way of demonstrating all of the hard work that has been put in over the winter!
Spring camp was the first camp for our new novices; they made massive improvements on the water and it was so great to see everyone getting involved and working hard through some tough trainings. Many novice athletes had their first time in singles at this camp, which can be a daunting experience but a massive accomplishment for those who gave it a go. Camp can seem very full on at first, with many hours training and being constantly exposed to new experiences, but this year's novices handled it so well and we hope everyone is excited for summer camp!
Finally, another highlight of camp that many look forward to is the talent show. We had a great selection of performances this year, which I’m sure took many practices to perfect! Overall it was a very fun evening and everyone did a great job getting involved and putting themselves out there.
Overall, this year’s spring camp has been very successful, full of major improvements on water and lots of teamwork shown throughout the training and the talent show. I think everyone has used the extra time on flat water to their advantage to further improve their rowing techniques and we have seen some positive changes in boat speeds, especially in time trials. In addition, it was good to see the novices getting into it and completing their first rowing camp. We are looking forward to the season ahead and the future camp and regattas to come!
