Summer Camp: Captain’s Report

Despite it being a tough week of hot weather, racing, and long training sessions, Summer Camp has been established as one of the highlights of this season so far. Some amazing work and progress was displayed across the club by athletes of all age groups through some challenging conditions that everyone should be very proud of. We managed to get a significant amount of time on the water, allowing for the coaches to be able to give valuable feedback to all of the athletes that will prove to be very helpful as we prepare for the upcoming regattas this month.

Milla: This was an incredibly positive week for the girls – it was amazing to see the competitive and motivating atmosphere grow as the seat races and time trials were carried out. For many of the junior and novice girls, it was their first time undergoing this kind of pressure and training but it was great to see the determination that was shared across age groups. With many injuries and sicknesses, the senior girls had a few setbacks but managed to stay focused and ended the camp with a very successful dam row in our quads and then time trials in small boats on the final day.

Ollie: I found the week to be both very enjoyable and highly productive. Coming into camp, the boys knew we had a lot to work on, and I feel we were able to clearly identify the areas that needed improvement and actively work to iron them out throughout the camp. The competitiveness between the quads drove a strong work ethic among the boys, which has consequently led to a significant step forward in speed. Getting to go for a row in the 8+ was also a massive highlight for a lot of us.

In addition to this, through coxing the senior girls’ crews, it was clear to see that this productivity extended across the entire club. The consistency of effort and willingness to improve meant that by the end of the camp, the girls were rowing at an extremely high level, a strong indicator of great things to come.

Across the camp, every age group showed clear improvement, highlighting both the effectiveness of the training and the commitment of the athletes. The hard work completed throughout the week has placed the club in a strong position heading into the rest of the season.
